Satellites Project

You and your group are to construct a model of a satellite which has been launched into orbit around the earth. The model should be relatively small ( less than 30 cm x 30 cm) and be able to be hung with a string. It may be made from any sort of material which you can come up with, but poster board or cardboard is okay. The model should represent what the satellite actually looks like.

You are also to prepare a card ( that can be attached to the model with more string) which gives the following information about the satellite:

Any other information which you can obtain would be okay also.

You will be given time in the Media Center to begin your search.

There are a number of websites which give information about satellites. Many will give pictures. I have some pictures saved in my computer which you may want to view.

Some satellites which you may want to choose are listed below, although there are many others.

  1. Sputnik
  2. Explorer 1
  3. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES-1)
  4. Solar Maximum Mission (SMM)
  5. Tracking and Data Relay Satellite
  6. TDRS
  7. Gamma Ray Observatory (GRO)
  8. Hubble Telescope
  9. Project Starshine satellite
  10. Telstar
  11. MIR
  12. ISS (International Space Station)
  13. COBE
  14. COSMOS
  15. NOAA
  16. GPS

The following websites may be useful to you as you begin your search. The heavens-above site allows to you see which satellites are visible for Delphi and at what times and locations in the sky relative to the stars.

You must tell me what satellite you are choosing by the end of the period on Thursday. You will have some time in class to work on this project next week. The models are due on November 19th.
